Group Leader
The CATARI research group was established in 2025, with Kasper Krommes as Group Leader, which is focused on the condition Apophysitis. The group is anchored within the Sports Orthopedic Research Center – Copenhagen, led by Prof. Per Hölmich, at the Orthopedic Department, Copenhagen University Hospital, Amager-Hvidovre.
Background
CATARI works across the translational continuum, from early knowledge generation and mechanistic understanding of apophysitis to clinical evaluation, implementation, and real-world impact. The group’s ambition is to ensure that research does not stop at knowledge generation, but moves toward solutions that can improve care and participation for children and adolescents suffering from apophysitis.
Aim
Innovation is a central part of this work. CATARI aims to advance bold ideas by building interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships across fields that do not always work closely together, such as engineering, software development, machine learning and AI integration, biochemistry, biomechanics, and biomedical imaging.
The group is well positioned within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being. Link to goal 3.: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” This is reflected in CATARI’s mission-statement:
Our vision is that children and adolescents face no health-related barriers to sport and physical activity, allowing them to participate in meaningful and healthy activities and communities.
Our purpose is to provide knowledge and tools for managing and preventing apophysitis, for both children and adolescents, as well as for clinicians, parents, and decision-makers.
Our mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement approaches, as well as the use of and knowledge of measurement tools, new technologies, diagnostics, pathogenesis, and prognosis for apophysitis in children and adolescents, across settings, sectors, and professional groups, by conducting excellent, high-impact research with patient partners.
While Sustainable Development Goal 3 defines the societal direction, the Inner Development Goals help frame the human capabilities needed to pursue that direction responsibly. As a research group, CATARI has embedded the Inner Development Goals in its professional development and group culture, with attention to reflective practice, collaboration, embracing complexity, learning, and responsible action.
For now, CATARI is centered around a few flagship projects, but the portfolio and collaborations are expanding, in order to support the mission-driven purpose of CATARI.
