​Rehabilitation and mobilization after surgery​

Focus

Hospitalized patients:

  • Implement and develop interventions for optimizing early rehabilitation and mobilization after surgery among fragile patients, hip fracture patients, patients with lower extremity amputations, traumatic multi-fractured patients, and others with upper and lower extremity fractures.

  • Assessment of functional limitations and compensatory strategies, guidance in the delivery of assistive devices, and assessment of the need for further rehabilitation.

  • Systematic assessment of physical capacity and functional impairment.

  • Optimization of interdisciplinary communication within the hospital and across primary and secondary health sectors to achieve optimal and evidence-based rehabilitation.

  • Ongoing focus on quality assurance of our documentation practices and continuous reporting to national clinical quality databases.

Outpatients:

  • Provide high-quality physiotherapy services based on up-to-date evidence and best practices to sports orthopedic patients and patients with complex pre- and postoperative symptoms in close collaboration with orthopedic surgeons.

  • Implement and support research to optimize early specialized rehabilitation in close collaboration with orthopedic surgeons and researchers.

  • Ongoing focus on quality assurance of documentation practices.

  • Pre-instruction in the early initiation of postoperative exercises, pain management, and return to daily activities and sports prior to arthroscopic surgeries of the shoulder, knee, and hip.

​Examples of ongoing work: 

Participation in the development of a national clinical quality databases for leg amputations (DANAMP)

Participation in the development and implementation of research programs across the hospital in cooperation with Physical- and Occupational Therapy, Orthopedic Surgery and Clinical Research at Copenhagen University Hospital, Amager and Hvidovre: E.g., SAGA and DRAW-TKA research programs.

Participation in the research program HIP-ME-UP leaded by: Maria Swennergren Hansen, PT, PhD, Postdoc : Understanding and explaining clinical practice regarding basic mobility and physical activity in patients following a hip fracture. The HIP-ME-UP research program.​ 

​Selected outputs

The orthopedic group participates in the development of new post-operative rehabilitation protocols, the updating of existing ones, and the dissemination of content across sectors in collaboration with Sport Orthopedic Research Center – Copenhagen (SORC-C)
