What is PMR-C?

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Research – Copenhagen (PMR-C) is a founder-led research program in physical medicine and rehabilitation established in 2013 across Departments of: Physical- and Occupational Therapy, Orthopedic Surgery and Clinical Research at Copenhagen University Hospital, Amager and Hvidovre.

Mission

Fantastic research and excellent education

Our mission is to improve rehabilitation healthcare by producing fantastic research and educating excellent researchers who know right from wrong.

We focus on the use of physical medicine to enhance recovery in patients, or to prevent injury or disease. Our approach is clinical, but we also conduct basic research to investigate mechanisms and research to develop new outcome measures.

Collaboration over competition

The PMR-C core is the Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy’s activities within research, development work research, implementation, education, and clinical work improvements.

We actively seek to create synergy between PMR-C and the other research groups of the three departments.

We believe strongly in collaboration over competition.

Excellence without kindness has little value

Academia can be competitive. We believe that excellence must not come at the expense of kindness, and that excellence without kindness has little value. We recruit talent and seek collaboration based on this belief. Our value keywords are; excellence, integrity, transparency, diversity and kindness.

Transparency

We believe in open science and transparency in clinical research. We participate in academic discussions on research methodology, ethics, and biases that prevent science from self-correction or create injustices.

Our values

1. Quality and integrity
We strive to deliver work of the highest standard, characterized by momentum, integrity, and decency. Our decision-making is guided by our moral compass and a clear sense of right and wrong. Getting things done and following through is essential to us.

2. Communication and debate
We recognize that hierarchies exist—even within PMR-C—but we value humility and consciously aim for a culturally non-hierarchical environment. We practice clear and open communication and foster dialogue. We embrace debate, believing that disagreement and diverse perspectives fuel growth and learning. We argue as if we are right but listen as if we are wrong. We feel a responsibility to speak up when we disagree—regardless of who we disagree with.

3. Learning and knowledge sharing
We share our knowledge generously—both internally and externally. We believe knowledge grows and creates the most value when it is shared freely and widely. We view our differences as a strength and encourage curiosity about each other's skills and perspectives. We actively invite people with viewpoints different from our own to challenge our assumptions and avoid groupthink.

4. Innovation and challenging the status quo
We challenge norms and traditions respectfully—but insistently. We are unafraid to think creatively and to experiment. We recognize that innovation involves risk and that we may make mistakes. We view mistakes as opportunities for learning and celebrate a "failure-friendly culture."

5. Collective and individual success
We prioritize collective success because no one succeeds alone, and we are all part of the same team. We believe that helping others is key to achieving our own success. Our strength lies in community, generous knowledge sharing, and collective intelligence. And we can only harness collective intelligence by sharing. We create space for mutual sparring and feedback, and we strive to create value together.

6. Togetherness and relationships
We prioritize spending time together to build trust and understanding. By engaging in each other's lives, we create stronger and more meaningful relationships—both within and beyond the workplace. We value a culture of physical presence, as relationships are built and strengthened in the real world.
