Purpose of the study/project
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether trephination of the vascular zone of the meniscus, when combined with all-inside repair, would improve healing compared to all-inside repair without trephination.
About the study/project
All-inside repair of meniscal injuries has a high failure and reoperation rate. Since partial meniscectomy is a risk factor for developing arthritis, it is considered in many cases good clinical practice to repair menisci—even though the high failure rate may lead to additional surgeries. In recent years, the development of improved repair techniques and research into biological augmentation to enhance healing has progressed. Both animal and human studies have reported improved healing of meniscal lesions through trephination.
Trephination is a needling technique that creates small tunnels in the red vascular zone of the meniscus to promote bleeding. This bleeding may improve healing in the less vascularized parts of the meniscus.
