About the study/project

Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a severe traumatic injury with lifechanging consequences on knee function and daily physical activity. To restore knee stability, surgical reconstruction is often indicated. The most common methods are the use of autografts harvested from 1) the quadriceps tendon (QT), 2) the hamstring tendons (ST/Gr), or 3) the patella tendon (BPTB). Despite 2500 surgeries per year and many years of research, the ideal graft choice remains widely debated. Due to lack of high quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and missing comparability across current studies, no national guideline on graft exists.

Purpose of the study/project

The aim of the RCT is to investigate the effect of graft choice from a patient-centered, biomechanical, clinical, and muscle morphological perspective. By applying this 360° scientific approach, we intend to establish scientific evidence to support clinical guidelines for surgical treatment of ACL reconstruction. ​
