Purpose of the study/project​​​​

To investigate the injury burden and training/match load in the best Danish youth badminton players.

About the study/project

Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the world, especially in Asia, with estimated 100 million players in China (Duerden, 2020). Despite the sport’s widespread popularity, there is a notable lack of comprehensive knowledge regarding injury epidemiology, particularly among youth players. Prospective studies investigating injuries among adolescent badminton players are scarce, with reported incidence rates (IR) ranging from 0.9 to 2.4 injuries per 1000 hours of play (Goh, Mokhtar and Mohamad Ali, 2013; Miyake et al., 2016). However, these data, now over a decade old, may no longer be representative since the game and training culture have evolved markedly trough the last ten years. Furthermore, there are no prospective studies on injuries among adolescents in non-Asian countries although there may be geographical differences in the injury epidemiology (Kaldau et al., 2021). 

The aforementioned studies have predominantly relied on medical records for their methodological approach. However, this reliance may lead to an underestimation of the true injury burden since medical records often fail to capture the full spectrum of injuries, particularly those that are self-managed by the players or deemed minor(Yard, Collins and Comstock, 2009; Nilstad, Bahr and Andersen, 2014). Therefore, it is of paramount importance to map the injury pattern in adolescent badminton players using more direct data collection methods, such as self-reports via text message. Weekly text messages provide a timely, consistent, convenient, and accessible means of mapping injury incidence in sports, making this method an ideal tool for prospective studies (ref). ​
