​Senior Staff


​Line is a Senior Researcher at the Dept. of Clinical Research and also affiliated with the Moffitt-Caspi Lab, Dept. of Psychology & Neuroscience, Duke University, NC, USA, where she did her postdoctoral training from 2018-2021. Line has a background in Molecular Biomedicine (BSc & MSc) and a PhD in Im​munology and Infectious Diseases from University of Copenhagen. ​

Summary

My overall ambition is to promote the years lived free of disease and disability (healthspan) in an increasingly longer life, with a focus on inflammation and cellular senescence in immune aging and disease development. My research integrates theory and methods from immunology, cell biology, epidemiology, clinical research, and population-based studies to study 1) risk factors, mechanisms, and biomarkers of inflammation and immune aging, and 2) interventions to reduce systemic chronic inflammation and cellular senescence to improve patient outcomes.​

My previous work has been instrumental in redefining suPAR as a biomarker of systemic chronic inflammation. During my PhD, I established suPAR as a strong prognostic biomarker across patient groups, independently associated with organ damage, inflammation, comorbidities, complications, and death. As a postdoc at Duke, I showed that elevat​ed suPAR is associated with accelerated biological aging, physical and cognitive decline, in addition to stress across the lifespan, childhood victimization, and unhealthy lifestyle, using the renowned longitudinal Dunedin Study (New Zealand) and E-Risk (UK) cohorts. We consistently observed how suPAR is a more robust marker of systemic chronic inflammation than traditional inflammation markers, incl. CRP and IL-6.

​Juliette is a Postdoc at the Dept. of Clinical Research with a background in Human Biology (MSc) and a PhD in Immunology and Infectious Diseases from University of Copenhagen.

Summary

My research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of biological aging and identifying biomarkers of aging, with a particular focus on immunosenescence, cellular senescence, and chronic inflammation, and with the aim to identify potential therapeutic targets for promoting healthy aging and improving outcomes for older adults. 

My current work includes the investigation and characterization of GDF15 as a biomarker of aging, the identification of novel biomarkers of aging using plasma proteomic analysis, and coordinating a pilot randomized clinical trial to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of the senotherapeutic fisetin in healthy volunteers and older patients with multimorbidity.

Maria is a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist at the Dept. of Clinical Research and holds a BSc in Biomedical Laboratory Science from University College Copenhagen.

​Summary

My primary role within the research group involves supporting several key areas across various ongoing projects. This includes the establishment of biobanks, sample analysis (blood and tissue samples), and optimization of protocols and workflows, all of which are essential for advancing the understanding of senescence, chronic inflammation, and the impact of senolytic treatments in both murine models and humans.

Summary

​My PhD project investigates risk factors, mechanisms, and interventions for inflammaging and immune cell senescence to reduce the burden of age-related diseases. 

Currently, I am conducting a mouse study to evaluate the efficacy of the senolytic agent fisetin in aging, comparing its effects in old and young mice on high-fat or standard diet. Additionally, I am analyzing patient samples from the FAM-CPH Cohort to assess senescence markers in immune cell subsets. 

In parallel, I am culturing T cells, inducing senescence, and profiling their biomarker expression to characterize the senescence phenotype. Next, I will help coordinate our pilot RCT on fisetin's effects in older multimorbid patients and analyze samples from the study, focusing on improvements in immune function. 

Additionally, I will conduct a multi-cohort registry study to establish reliable biomarkers of inflammaging and immunosenescence. Through this translational research, I aim to develop strategies that can be applied in clinical settings and potentially make a real difference for patients.

Magnus Berglind

​Magnus is a PhD student at the Dept. of Clinical Research, currently enrolled at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, in the Graduate Programme in Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Magnus has a BSc in Biochemistry and an MSc in Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology from University of Copenhagen. 

Summary

​​My PhD project investigates the interplay between chronic systemic inflammation (SCI) and cellular senescence (CS) and evaluates the potential of biomarker-guided senolytic interventions to mitigate their harmful effects.

I am currently conducting a latent class analysis on a collection of large population cohorts to assess suPAR as a marker of chronic inflammation, while also running in vitro studies exploring the relationship between SCI and CS in human cell models. 

Finally, I will help coordinate and analyze samples for our pilot RCT testing the effects of the senolytic fisetin in older multimorbid patients. Through this work, I hope to bridge basic science and clinical research to find better ways to support healthy aging and improve quality of life.

Laura is a PhD candidate in Molecular and Clinical Medicine at the University of Palermo, Italy, and a pediatric resident physician at the University of Trieste (IRCCS Materno Infantile “Burlo Garofolo"). She is currently conducting a research stay at the Dept. of Clinical Research, Hvidovre Hospital. Laura obtained her MD degree from the University of Palermo, with an experimental thesis focused on tuberculosis in childhood.

Summary

My research lies at the intersection of pediatric infectious diseases, immunology, and social determinants of health. I am currently involved in projects focused on predicting the severity of infectious diseases in pediatric age, including the development of a clinically interpretable severity score for viral respiratory infections using multicenter cohort data.

Another focus of my research explores the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), immune-inflammatory dysregulation, and vulnerability to infectious diseases in children, with particular interest in biomarkers and stress-related pathways.

My previous work includes cohort studies and reviews on respiratory viral infections, tuberculosis, and severe bacterial infections. During my current research stay, I am expanding my methodological training in laboratory-based translational research and inflammatory biomarkers.

Anton Bæk-Madsen Brockmann

​Anton is an MSc student, currently enrolled in the Biochemistry MSc programme (specializing in Cell Biology and Immunology) at the University of Copenhagen. Anton holds a BSc in Biochemistry from University of Copenhagen. 

Summary

​In my master's project, I aim to investigate the effects of cortisol on inflammation at the cellular level in human immune cells. While cortisol is primarily recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties, the relationship becomes more complex under certain conditions, such as specific doses and prolonged exposure, where cortisol may exhibit pro-inflammatory effects. This project may help to clarify how chronic stress and altered cortisol signaling contribute to systemic chronic inflammation in patients, potentially increasing the risk of immune-related diseases.
