What is PrEP?

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive treatment against HIV infection. The treatment reduces the risk of Contracting HIV by over 99% when taken as prescribed. PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

Who is offered PrEP?

PrEP is offered to people at high risk of getting HIV. The treatment is primarily aimed at HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who engage in anal sex without a condom, with several different partners.

How does PrEP works?

The tablet contains two active ingredients; tenofovir and emtricitabine, which prevent HIV from multiplying. If HIV cannot multiply, the virus cannot survive.

How to take PrEP

PrEP is usually taken as one pill daily. The medicine can also be used “On Demand”, after individual agreement with a doctor or nurse from the infectious disease outpatient clinic.

Follow up when on Prep

When taking PrEP, you must do a follow up visit every 6 months at an infectious disease outpatient clinic. At the visit, your kidney function is monitored because a rare adverse effect to tenofovir may be impaired kidney function. Additionally, you will be tested for HIV.
