Blood sugar testing at home during pregnancy

Before testing your blood sugar at home, you must visit the hospital where we will teach you how to check your blood sugar levels.

About the test

You will need to check your blood sugar levels in connection with your pregnancy. Before you get started, you will have an appointment at the hospital where we will:

  • measure your long-term blood sugar levels
  • give you the equipment you will need at home
  • teach you how to check your blood sugar levels.

What to do

Over the next 3 days, you will need to check your blood sugar levels 6 times a day.

Check your blood sugar before and after meals

Check your blood sugar just before a meal. Avoid eating anything for 1½ hours before each meal. Check your blood sugar again 1½ hours after beginning the meal.

Register measurements on the Min Sundhedsplatform website

Enter your blood sugar levels on the Min Sundhedsplatform website. You can do this through the MinSP app or via a browser. You will need to create a profile before getting started. You can log on to the website with MitID.

Be aware of high blood sugar levels

Your blood sugar level before meals should be under 6.0 mmol/L. After the meal, it should be under 8.0 mmol/L.
You do not have to do anything if your blood sugar is too low. If multiple measurements show that your blood sugar is too high, i.e. over 10 mmol/L, please contact us at the phone number listed below.

How to use the equipment

Worth knowing

Do everything as you normally would

Do not change your eating or exercise habits during the 3 days you are taking measurements. Do everything as you normally would.

You will receive your results during a telephone consultation

We will call you approximately 1 week after you have measured your blood sugar levels. We will compare the levels your measured with the measurement of your long-term blood sugar levels.
