Liver

The overall aims of the Liver research are to:
  • Improve the lives of liver affected patients
  • Gain insight into the general mechanisms of  liver disease
  • Gain insight into pathological mechanisms of virus-induced liver disease
  • Improve the intervenetion on progression of disease through treatment
Achievements
Our research span from HCV basic virology to end-stage liver disease and treatment thereof. We are among world leaders in cell culturing of various HCV genotypes and in pathophysiological studies dealing with the consequences of portal hypertension in cirrhosis.

What is going on
Using our HCV cell culture systems, we are identifying and interacting with targets for HCV treatment and vaccine development. In end stage liver disease, we perform translational studies with focus on interplay of early signs of inflammation, bacteriel translocation and infection on haemodynamics and clinical consequences.

Furthermore to look for associations between derangements in haemodynamics and cardiomyopthy and renal insufficiency in cirrhosis.

Visions
To gain insight into HCV biology by studying entry, replication and budding. To identify pivotal mechanisms for drug interaction. To provide the molecular basis for HCV vaccine development.
To improve the understanding of the consequences of clinical complications of cirrhosis and thereby earlier to be able to offer the patient targeted treatment.
