Colon Cancer

Colorectal Cancer

Hvidovre Hospital, University of Copenhagen focuses on basic, translational and clinical research of both sporadic and hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC)

The national registers for Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC) and Familial Polyposis (FAP) are together with the Laboratory for Tumorbiology located at the hospital

The overall aims of research into CRC are:

· to gain insight into risk factors involved in cancer development

· detailed understanding of the complex biology of neoplasia leading to CRC

· to improve diagnosis and prognosis

· to develop and implement improved screening programs

· to identify biomarkers to predict risk and recurrence after intended curative resections

· to develop individualized treatment regimens

Achievements

National registers on HNPCC and FAP was established in 1991 and at present the register comprises almost 3.000 families, who are offered frequent specific screening

Biomedical informatics to support individual healthcare in form of electronic data exchange are developed and implemented in a multidisciplinary setup for HNPCC families.

What is going on?

A large number of studies with focus on

  • Genetic epidemiology
  • Phenotypes – genotypes in HNPCC
  • Genomic profiling in sporadic CRC and in HNPCC
  • Identification of families and individuals at risk of HNPCC
  • Evaluation of screening in HNPCC
  • Psychosocial aspects of HNPCC
  • Metagenome – large bowel bacterial/viral genomes and risk of CRC
  • Genetic profiling in sporadic adenomas and CRCs
  • Development of analysis platforms for proteomics and single protein analysis
  • Validation of a blood based concept for screening for sporadic large bowel neoplasia
  • Clinical studies with focus on selection, prediction and monitoring
  • Translational and clinical studies with focus on individualized treatment regimens

Vision

To provide improved screening and monitoring with the overall aim of reducing mortality of CRC
